Pair Of Large Pastoral Landscapes With Ruins, Northern Italy, Late 17th Century

Pair of Large Pastoral Landscapes with Ruins, Northern Italy, Late 17th – Early 18th Century

Description
Important pair of decorative oil paintings on canvas, depicting two pastoral landscapes animated with figures, animals and classical architectural ruins. The compositions belong to the tradition of the Italianate classical landscape, in which nature, antique ruins and rural life are brought together in a balanced and highly decorative manner.

The first painting shows a wooded landscape dominated by a large tree with dense foliage. Beneath it, two pastoral figures appear with their animals, set within a warm and atmospheric rural scene. In the middle distance, architectural ruins, including columns and fragments of antique structures, emerge from the landscape. Cattle, goats or sheep and a small body of water in the foreground contribute to the pastoral character of the composition.

The second painting presents a complementary subject, centred on monumental ruins with arches, broken masonry and architectural fragments partly surrounded by vegetation. Several shepherds, herd animals, horses or mules animate the foreground and middle ground. The composition is structured with a pronounced sense of depth, a nuanced sky and a warm chromatic range of ochres, browns, muted greens and golden tones.

Together, the two paintings form a coherent pair through their subject matter, scale, pictorial treatment and decorative purpose. Their monumental dimensions give them a strong architectural presence, making them particularly suitable for large interiors, historic residences, reception rooms, galleries, formal salons or spaces requiring a work of significant decorative impact.

Technique and materials
Oil on canvas. The paintings are presented in large gilt frames with moulded and carved decoration, enriched with foliate and floral motifs. The painterly handling, the luminous contrasts and the treatment of ruins, animals and figures correspond to large-scale decorative painting conceived for an architectural or palatial setting.

Dating
Northern Italy, late 17th century or early 18th century. This dating is based on the type of composition, the taste for landscapes with antique ruins, the inclusion of pastoral figures and animals, and the decorative vocabulary associated with this period.

Condition
Condition consistent with the age and scale of the works. The photographs of the reverse show old canvases mounted on stretchers, with signs of age, wear, oxidation, previous interventions and marks associated with long-term use. The frames also show wear, small losses, minor accidents and an aged patina. The pair nevertheless retains a strong decorative presence.

Function and display
This pair of paintings is intended for a large wall setting. It would be suitable for a salon, gallery, dining room, entrance hall or classical interior requiring a large-scale decorative ensemble with architectural and pastoral subject matter.
