Christ In Chains. *ecce Homo*, Rennes Earthenware. 18th Century.
Artist: Faïencerie De Rennes
Rare earthenware figure of Christ in bonds from Rennes, with polychrome decoration. 18th century.
Also known, as the inscription on the base indicates, as “Ecce Homo” (“Behold the Man”), as designated by Pontius Pilate at the time of his condemnation, or as “Christ Suffering Insults.”
Christ is depicted seated, clad only in a perizonium and covered with an ochre-colored cloak.
He wears the crown of thorns and holds a reed as a scepter in his bound hands.
The ochre marks on the body represent the suffering endured during the flagellation.
In generally good condition, with a few chips.
