Virgin And Child In Majesty - Glazed Earthenware Statuette And Candlestick, 18th- And 19th-century Folk Art

A glazed terracotta statuette depicting the Virgin and Child in majesty, shown from the front, wearing a hollow crown (perhaps designed to hold a candle).
The object is striking for the power and naivety of its modeling, which is characterized by a high density, with thick walls and red clay visible beneath the base.
The decoration consists of an intense green glaze for the robe, combined with yellow-ochre tones on the upper parts, enhanced by touches of brown oxides that emphasize the features and highlight the cheekbones.

Dated to the 18th or early 19th century.

In the absence of a signature, the geographical origin remains a mystery. The color palette evokes both the pottery of the Sarthe region and devotional souvenirs from Auvergne (Le Puy).

Dimensions: height 27 cm – maximum width 19 cm – weight 1,600 grams.

The piece is in a fine state of authenticity, although it shows a chip in the lower left corner, as well as normal wear and glaze chips.
