Pair Of Carved Ebony Panels Depicting Allegories Of Spring And Winter, France, 18th Century

Two rectangular panels carved in bas-relief from ebony, depicting an allegorical composition of the seasons: Spring and Winter.
Spring is depicted as a woman holding flowers. She rests on a pedestal adorned at the bottom with a basket filled with produce, a scythe, and a rake. The entire composition is set beneath a scalloped arch decorated with acanthus scrolls.
Winter is depicted as an old man warming his hands over a brazier resting on a leaf-decorated console. The scene is crowned by a drapery with fringes and ribbons.
Beautifully detailed high-relief carving that stands out against a finely guilloché background.
Mounted on an oak backing, likely taken from paneling or a dismantled piece of furniture.
Modern frame in burl veneer that highlights the contrast in tones.
In good condition, with some wear and missing pieces, as well as cracks (missing a strip on the back of the lower section for “Spring”).
Dimensions of the “Winter” panel alone:
36 cm x 77.5 cm (with frame: 42.5 cm x 84 cm)
Dimensions of the “Spring” panel alone:
