Swiss Symbolist School. Eduard Südisühli, "autumn Landscape With A Stormy Sky"
Artist: Eduard Paul Rüdisühli
Swiss School. Eduard Rüdisühli. Oil on canvas, “Autumn Landscape with a Stormy Sky,” signed lower right “Ed. Rüdisühli.” 31.8 x 48.2 cm. Swiss School.
Eduard Paul Rüdisühli (1875–1938) was born in Basel, Switzerland, where he studied painting under his brother Traugott Hermann Rüdisühli (1864–1944).
Both brothers were clearly influenced by Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901), the undisputed master of Swiss Symbolism. Our painting is a perfect example of what Nordic and Germanic Symbolism contributed to the aesthetics of the late 19th century. Here, the landscape is not merely a realistic observation of nature, but rather a state of mind (stimmungslandschaft).
The dramatic light, the stormy skies, the slender trees (cypresses, poplars, tall oaks), and the distant presence of mysterious architecture create an atmosphere of melancholy and meditation.
Modern painted wooden frame. Good condition.
