George Whitton Johnstone (1849-1901).
Here's how the Bénézit dictionary presents the Scottish painter: "This delicate artist started out as a cabinetmaker, but while practicing this profession he devoted himself to a rigorous study of drawing, which he completed by entering the school of the Royal Scottish Academy. From 1872 onwards, he exhibited constantly at the Royal Scottish Academy, of which he was made a Fellow in 1883 and an Academician in 1895...His work can be seen in the Edinburgh Museum: Where the Stream Flows into the Sea, and in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London: Saint Monans.
Our painting is part of a series of landscapes the artist produced in 1887, certainly at Dalmeny Woods (Scotland). A work entitled "Early Spring" of the same dimensions and depicting the same area of forest, minus the sheep, went under the hammer at Christie's London on 18/04/2007, lot N°1225. A similar landscape, "Spring time in Dalmeny Woods", is held at the Kirkaldy Galleries in Scotland.
Golden and painted wood and stucco baguette frame of the period. An old small restoration towards the lower right. Good condition.
980 euros.
