Born in 1926, Jacques Ruelland studied painting at the École desBeaux-Arts in Versailles. There he met DanièleDupin, a sculpture student six years his junior and his future wife.
Following a stay in the Var region, where Jacques and Dani discoveredthe works of Picasso, Madoura, Capron, and Picault, they embarked on anartistic adventure with clay. Danièle created the forms and Jacques decorated them.
After running a studio in Versailles, the couple moved to SaintGermain-des-Prés, on Rue de Buci, where they lived until 1970, before relocating to the smallvillage of Les Angles, near Avignon.
Jacques and Dani created their own dark clay (made fromwhite clay from Provis, kaolin clay, and manganese) to highlightthe nuances of the glazes they made themselves. The initial graphicmotifs—birds, fish, and other subjects—faded over time, giving way tomonochromatic glazes: first matte, then satin, and finally glossy. At first glance, these aresimple, functional, and decorative objects. But by breaking free fromperfect symmetry, they exude a surprising sculptural andartistic power.
