Large Embroidered Panel Depicting The Holy Shroud Of Besançon – 18th Century – Large Format (87 Cm X 52
Large embroidered panel depicting the Holy Shroud of Besançon – 18th century – Large format (87 cm x 52 cm)
Description:
Large embroidered panel mounted on a wooden panel depicting a public display of the Holy Shroud of Besançon, dating from the first half of the 18th century
The central scene depicts a mitered bishop flanked by two clergymen, presenting the relic cloth horizontally beneath a protective canopy. The entire composition is enhanced by a rich, wide peripheral border featuring a floral motif, adorned with scrollwork, flowers, and stylized foliage in the Louis XV style.
This panel stands out notably for its unusual dimensions of 87 cm by 52 cm. While nearly all embroidered pieces associated with the veneration of the Holy Shroud of Besançon that have been discovered are small in size and intended for domestic devotion, this piece is a commissioned work of ceremonial liturgical art, likely intended to serve as an altar frontal or altar cloth.
The craftsmanship is exceptionally refined, executed in polychrome silk embroidery embellished with numerous gold and silver threads.
Condition: The piece has been preserved “in its original state,” showing signs of wear, gaps in the silk ground, and natural oxidation of the metallic threads, all of which attest to its authenticity and history (see photos).
