Pair of large cotton percale curtains – Napoleon III period

A rare pair of large 19th-century curtains made of cotton percale, circa 1860.
The fabric features a sumptuous floral design depicting symmetrical compositions of urns overflowing with lively flowers and birds, surrounded by broad foliage scrolls and leafy volutes. The print displays remarkable finesse of execution, featuring an elegant monochromatic palette of gray, pink, and off-white that stands out against a deep red background.
Each panel is composed of several strips sewn together vertically. The pattern repeat is perfectly designed and rigorously aligned from one curtain to the next, attesting to the great technical mastery of the manufacturer and the period upholsterer.


These pieces are presented “as found,” having undergone no modern alterations. The seams are entirely hand-sewn. All panel joins, hems, and finishes are crafted by hand using period linen/cotton thread. These curtains are presented unlined, allowing the fabric to drape beautifully. The top is the original gathered header mounted on a thick cotton canvas backing strip. The original patinated brass/bronze hanging rings are securely hand-sewn to the back of the header.

Height: 280 cm and width: 244 cm

Exceptionally well-preserved, practically perfect condition. The fabric is sound, sturdy, and has retained its vibrant colors. No holes, no tears, no patches, and no restoration to report. Absolutely no sun damage. An absolute rarity for textiles of this scale that have endured nearly 150 years.
