Rosewood Cabinet With Bone Inlays – Northern Italy, 17th Century
Important cabinet in rosewood with engraved bone inlays
Northern Italy, 17th century
An important cabinet veneered in rosewood, richly decorated with engraved bone inlays featuring geometric and ornamental motifs—a testament to the refinement and mastery of 17th-century cabinetmakers from Northern Italy.
The upper section is centered around an elegant architectural portico, inspired by classical architecture, framed by columns and topped with a pediment. The central door opens to reveal a "theater" (an interior display space) containing four drawers, while six side drawers—arranged symmetrically—retain their original locks, though the keyholes have been sealed. A large, full-width drawer completes the lower section of the cabinet. The cresting features a balustraded gallery, accented by carved bone vases.
The stand, added in the 19th century, harmoniously complements the proportions of the piece and incorporates a large drawer within the frieze.
The cabinet is striking for the contrast between the rich, deep tones of the rosewood and the delicate, engraved bone inlays, as well as for its architectural composition and beautiful patina.
Condition: Good overall condition, with a lovely, aged patina. Original locks present; the keyholes on the side drawers have been sealed.
Dimensions: H. 145 cm; W. 113 cm; D. 45 cm (lower section); D. 36 cm (upper section).
Delivery: Shipping within France and internationally via a specialized carrier; quotes available upon request. In-person collection is also possible by appointment.
