German Copper Fish Basin, Early 18th Century, Dinanderie, Castle Fountain

Large fishbowl made of hammered and repoussé copper—dated 1719 and bearing the monogram MD

Of substantial size (53 cm high and 63 cm in diameter), this type of basin was the preserve of the aristocracy, as some similar models bear coats of arms (Galleria Antiquaria Chiavacci - Firenze, Italy). Easily transportable thanks to its two side handles and its large capacity, this basin was used to carry live fish from the fishpond or market to the kitchens. The lid can be removed entirely or opened from either side.

An interesting piece notable for having been made early in the 18th century. As a result, it shows signs of wear: the hinges have been repaired as is customary, and there is a small chip on one of them.

Decorative work: repoussé rosette and braids, twisted lid handle

A similar piece was auctioned at the Palais Dorotheum in Vienna, lot 1002 on October 23, 2024, and sold for 1,300 euros. The lid featured repoussé fish motifs.

Another example is held in the collections of the Kupfermuseum Fischen.
