Pocket Sundial By Thibault, C. 1840
Artist: A. Thibault
A rare example of a “Horometer or Pocket Sundial,” designed and built by A. Thibault in Paris.
This horometer was invented around 1840; it is mentioned in the press in 1840, 1841, and 1853.
This horizontal sundial is of the “Capuchin” type; it is designed for a single latitude—in this case, 49 degrees, which is the latitude of Paris, Nancy, or Strasbourg.
This type of sundial, known as a “Capuchin” or map sundial, was invented and developed by Regiomontanus and Apian in the early 16th century.
A. Thibault held a bachelor’s degree in science and later worked as a physics and mathematics teacher in Paris. He was based at 14 Rue Pierre-Sarrazin.
Our specimen is complete and retains its original case, to which a leaflet explaining the use of the sundial has been attached.
The sundial measures 15 × 8.4 cm, and its case measures 14.7 × 9.3 cm.
Very rare.
