Muzio Scevola, Oil On Slate From The First Half Of The 17th Century. Attributed To Frans Francken Ii.
Artist: Sphère De Frans Francken Ii
A unique collector's item depicting the famous scene of the act of bravery performed by the young Roman Gaius Mucius during the siege of Rome by the Etruscan king Porsenna (508 B.C.) To demonstrate to the king just how little the Romans feared pain and death, Mucius resolutely plunged his right hand into a burning brazier used for sacrifice, letting it burn without uttering a cry.
It is plausible to think that this painting may have come from a Flemish workshop and been executed by a skilled painter who assimilated the figurative, spatial, and atmospheric style of Frans Francken II (Antwerp, May 6, 1581 – Antwerp, May 6, 1642).
The slate panel, which is in good condition and shows no cracks, measures 50 cm x 51 cm; the exterior dimensions of the 18th-century frame are approximately 57 cm x 60 cm.
A certificate of authenticity is included with the sale.
