Pair Of Bringaree Figurines By Royal Worcester, James Hadley, 1893

Artist: Royal Worcester

A matching pair of Victorian porcelain figurines by Royal Worcester, with a pinkish-ivory base, modeled by James Hadley and produced in 1893.

This allegorical pair depicts traditional Indian nomadic figures known as Bringaree or Brinjaree. The man, wearing an intricately detailed turban, carries a long musket and a dagger at his belt; his companion is elegantly depicted with a rustic staff. Both figures rest on naturalistic bases imitating rocky terrain.

The unusual color palette is one of the distinctive features of this pair. The ivory and pinkish background is enriched with pink, lavender, muted blue, and olive green enamels, accented with gilding. The male figure’s turban and decorated scarf, as well as the woman’s pointed headdress, necklace, and belt, lend the ensemble a particularly refined presence.

The bases bear Royal Worcester’s purple stamped mark corresponding to 1893, as well as the mold number 1243. The male figure bears the registered design number 78876, and the female figure bears the number 78877. The designs were registered in 1887; the trademarks confirm that this pair was manufactured in 1893.

Dimensions: Man: height 22.9 cm; base 8.7 × 8.7 cm; weight 430 g. Woman: height 21.6 cm; base 8.7 × 8.7 cm; weight 315 g.

Condition: The male figure has a very fine crack at the point where the coat meets the base, visible only under a strong magnifying glass. Otherwise, it is in excellent vintage condition, with remarkable preservation of the colors, enamels, and gilding. The female figure has a very fine crack beneath the necklace. A few small areas of very professionally executed color retouching are found on the reverse side of the cloak and are noticeable only under a magnifying glass. The overall impression remains excellent, with very well-preserved colors, enamels, and gilding
