Henri And Jules Dobbelaere - Original Designs For The Dadizele Basilica, 1860 -

Artist: Henri Et Jules Dobbelaere

Pair of watercolors on paper.
One is signed in the lower right corner: J. Dobbelaere – Walplaats 33, Bruges. Painted around 1880.

The other, an older work, circa 1860, features annotations on the left in the artist’s hand describing the stained-glass windows in Dutch, as well as the signatures of the committee that organized the restoration of the stained-glass windows in 1936 following the destruction caused by World War I in 1917 and 1918.

Restorations were carried out based on the original designs created by Henri and Jules Dobbelaere around 1860 and 1880 for the production of the stained-glass windows by their studio during the construction of the Basilica between 1857 and 1880.
The watercolors measure 55 cm x 34 cm and 56 cm x 31 cm (without frames); 58 cm x 37 cm and 59 cm x 34 cm in total.
They depict the original designs for the stained-glass windows of the Basilica of Dadizele (Belgium), created around 1860 and 1880 by:

Henri Dobbelaere (1822–1885) and Jules Dobbelaere (1859–1916), both Belgian master glassmakers born in Bruges. Henri was a student of Albert Gregorius at the Bruges Academy and of Gustave Wappers at the Antwerp Academy; he began his career as a painter before becoming a glass artist around 1860. Jules was a student of his father, whose workshop he took over upon his death. They were renowned as creators of stained-glass windows found in churches (Saint Sauveur, Chapel of the Holy Blood, etc.), convents, and the Bruges City Hall; in the Market Halls of Ypres; in the City Hall and Saint Martin’s Church in Kortrijk; St. Nicholas in Diksmuide, and St. Bavo in Ghent, among others. Works are held in the museums of Bruges, Brussels, and Kortrijk. Artists listed in the Bénézit, Arto, and Piron catalogs. Priced on Artprice, Artnet, etc...

The watercolor paper by Henri Dobbelaere shows visible creases and water stains.
The other is in excellent condition.
