19th-century Religious Painting, "the Entombment"

19th-century religious painting. Unsigned oil on panel, "The Entombment." 45.7 x 37.3 cm. French school.
The composition features four iconic figures from this Gospel episode.
The dead Christ lies in the foreground; Joseph of Arimathea, on the left, carries Christ’s legs toward the tomb; the Virgin Mary in the center of the background, her hands folded across her chest in a prayerful pose, and Saint John the Evangelist on the right, respectfully supporting Christ’s body.
The background is adorned with a stenciled gold background featuring rosette motifs.
The mahogany panel is stamped with the promotional stamp of Maison Alcan, 11 rue d’Assas in Paris (Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, Montparnasse, the artistic heart of 19th-century Paris).
Modern lacquered and gilded wooden frame. A few minor imperfections and an old restoration near the right eye of Saint John the Evangelist. Some normal wear on the gold background. Good overall condition.
