Single-shot parlor pistol – 5 mm rimfire caliber – 19th century – Needs restoration AMF26PIS001

19th-century single-shot pistol with a tip-up/hinge-frame mechanism (second half of the century, circa 1860–1900).

Freely available for purchase, Category D; the owner must be of legal age to possess this firearm.

This small, single-shot pistol with a long barrel belongs to the family of parlor firearms (parlor pistols / gallery pistols) that were widespread in Europe during the second half of the 19th century, particularly in Belgium (Liège) and France.

It is designed for indoor or gallery shooting and uses 5 mm rimfire cartridges.

This very low-power ammunition, similar to Flobert cartridges, consists of a metal case with a rimfire primer (rim), an extremely small powder charge (sometimes consisting solely of the primer compound), and a small, lightweight lead bullet.

They produce little noise, virtually no recoil, and very little smoke, which made it possible to shoot comfortably in an apartment, a bourgeois parlor, or a shooting gallery.

These firearms were used primarily for recreational shooting, precision training, or as a form of high-society entertainment.

They were often presented in elegant cases and served more as a discreet status symbol than as a weapon for self-defense.
