Important earthenware aquarium with blue decoration in the Chinese style – Late 19th century SDC26AQU001 Netherlands / Delft region. Beautiful and rare glazed earthenware aquarium with blue decoration on a white background, decorated with stylized fish and aquatic plants. The piece features an elegant Chinese-inspired decoration, typical of the taste for the Far East that marked European production in the second half of the 19th century. European earthenware inspired by Chinese design, produced during a period when Orientalism and a taste for China were very fashionable (Napoleon III → early 20th century). The treatment of the fish and algae, while oriental in style, reveals a European execution. The glaze displays a fine, regular crackle pattern. Of considerable size and weight (over 10 kg), this aquarium was a refined decorative element for a bourgeois interior, conservatory, or winter garden.
