“Edelweiss” Lamp Base Made from a Genuine Horse Shoe – Silver-Plated Metal Frame with Pocket Watch Holder – Late 19th-Century Curiosity Cabinet AMF25LMP001

A superb and rare lamp base crafted from a genuine horse shoe, mounted on an elegant silver-plated metal frame.

The shoe bears the name of the horse “Edelweiss”, engraved on the frame. It is topped by a frame with fluid, stylized lines, characteristic of the equestrian and decorative tastes of the late Victorian/early Edwardian era.

A dedicated hook allows you to hang a pocket watch (watch not included—shown only to illustrate the listing).

The white frosted glass shade features a relief decoration in the Art Nouveau style (floral and botanical motifs).
The tulip shade is period and in good condition.

These objects, highly sought after by collectors of equestrian art and cabinets of curiosities, were typically produced by the great London taxidermists of the late 19th century, foremost among them Rowland Ward. Based in Piccadilly under the name “The Jungle,” Rowland Ward specialized in transforming animal parts—horse hooves, elephant feet, deer antlers—into furniture and decorative objects known as “Wardian furniture.”

Rowland Ward also fulfilled special orders for his clients; in such cases, the objects rarely bore the manufacturer’s mark, as is the case here. Thus, lamps, inkwells, watch stands, and candlesticks were often commissioned as mementos of racehorses, hunting horses, war horses for officers, or companion horses, and the animal’s name was frequently engraved on them.

These pieces combined taxidermy expertise, goldsmithing, and a penchant for mementos, perfectly suited to the interiors of the upper middle class of the time.

Electrical: Fully inspected and tested. Wiring replaced and fully secured. Prepared for a bayonet-base bulb (bulb not included).
