Louis XVI Period Tulipwood Writing Table With A Marquetry Allegory Of Music
Louis XVI Period Tulipwood Writing Table with a Marquetry Allegory of Music
Description:
This writing table, or lady's desk, veneered in tulipwood (bois de rose), features a rectangular top centered on an oval medallion inlaid with an allegory of Music: a violin, a wind instrument, and sheets of music, tied with a ribbon and accompanied by leafy sprays, stand out against a dark ground. The medallion is set within radiating veneer, framed by stringing and a marquetry Greek key border at the corners.
The restrained frieze opens with two side drawers fitted with brass pulls. The table stands on four straight, faceted, slightly tapering legs ending in bronze sabots on casters.
Musical trophies were among the favorite motifs of the Louis XVI ornamental repertoire, evoking the refined pleasures of the salon and the art of conversation. With its measured proportions and fine marquetry, this table reflects the late 18th-century taste for small, elegant pieces of furniture designed for women, both precious and practical, intended for letter writing and reading.
