A Louis XVI Flat Desk Late-18th Circa 1785-1785

Large Louis XVI late-century desk in carved and varnished blackened pearwood, rectangular in shape, opening on one side with two juxtaposed drawers, centered by an overhanging cul-de-lampe, adorned with an elegant drapery supported by solid rings. The sharp-edged linear belt features brass quarter-rounds on all sides. It is joined to the base by connecting dowels adorned with sculpted plant motifs. It rests on a base with four square-section legs. Each of these is adorned with filleted flutes and terminates in carved acanthus flower hooves resting on a small flattened bronze ball-shaped cap, while the top is punctuated by a trilogy of discs, crowned by a plain convex ring. The whole set is topped by a large tray with emboiture, sheathed in gilded morocco embossed with grecques and rais de ruban.

This imposing flat desk was used by aristocrats, notables, doctors, ministers and other businessmen in the 18th century.
