Small Carved Single-piece Wooden Chest – Lace-maker's Box, Love Box – Folk Art

Late 19th century

France – Haute-Loire, Auvergne

A small lace-maker’s box made of fruitwood, entirely hand-carved in the tradition of Auvergne folk art. Crafted using the monoxyle technique, it is carved and hollowed out from a single piece of wood, with the exception of its sliding lid.

An intimate and familiar object, this small box is one of those modest reminders of rural life, where everyday utility blended with the artisan’s personal expression. Sometimes given as tokens of affection, these chests could hold thread, needles, jewelry, or small precious objects, becoming the silent guardians of memories and secrets.

Rectangular in shape, it features a rich geometric design deeply incised into the wood, combining herringbone patterns, wolf’s teeth, cross-hatching, and concentric rectangular compositions. Each side features a different ornamentation, organized around triangular motifs, crosses, and repetitive friezes—characteristic of the decorative repertoire of mountain folk art.

The sliding lid, also carved, echoes this ornamental style. It fits into grooves cut directly into the single-piece wooden body, demonstrating the ingenuity and simplicity of traditional craft techniques.

The choice of a fruit tree, prized for its density and fine grain, allows for meticulous carving of the ornamentation. The slight irregularities in the carving reveal the artisan’s patient touch and lend the piece that unique character typical of folk art.

Beyond its domestic function, this small box bears witness to a tradition in which woodworking could also become a language of emotion. Its beautiful antique patina, with warm and deep hues, preserves the memory of the hands that shaped it and those that used it.

Condition: Beautiful antique honey-brown patina, deep carving. Signs of use and minor wear consistent with its age. Sliding lid intact.
