Russian "persan" Porcelain Saucer. Private Russian Porcelain Manufacturers, 1820s
A rare, deep Russian porcelain saucer with a flared shape, produced at one of the private porcelain manufactories of the Russian Empire in the 1820s. Crafted from fine white porcelain, it is adorned with a wide, matte gold border, delicately chiseled, characteristic of productions from the era of Alexander I and the early reign of Nicholas I.
The center of the plate features a finely painted polychrome miniature depicting a richly dressed young Persian in a southern landscape with a palm tree and mountains in the background. These Orientalist compositions enjoyed great popularity during the first third of the 19th century, when evocations of the exotic East became naturally associated with European tea culture, turning every piece of the service into an invitation to travel.
The reverse bears the inscription “Persan” in red underglaze, identifying the figure depicted and characteristic of the decorative series produced by Russian manufacturers of that era.
Markings: “Persan” inscription in red underglaze.
