Myosotis

Nancy, France, circa 1925 (1920–1930).

Polychrome glass paste nightlight and incense burner, created by Amalric Walter based on a design by Marcel Corrette.

The egg-shaped lampshade features a high-relief design of bouquets of forget-me-nots, rendered in shades of turquoise, pale blue, and yellow on a deep blue background. The sculpted floral design is complemented by a wrought-iron frame comprising a circular base and an upper support.

When lit, the translucent glass paste reveals subtle variations in color and texture.

Signatures “A. Walter Nancy” and “Corrette” in the glass.

Dimensions: Height: 15 cm; base diameter: 16 cm.

Historical and Artistic Context

Amalric Walter wasone of the leading French masters of pâte de verre in the early 20th century and an important figure associated with the École de Nancy.

After working with the Daum factory in Nancy from 1904–1905 until World War I, Walter established his own studio in Nancy in 1919. He continued to develop the pâte de verre technique in collaboration with several sculptors and designers, notably Henri Bergé and Marcel Corrette.

Marcel Corrette studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Nancy and worked as a decorator and designer for the Majorelle workshops. He later taught drawing in Nancy and provided several designs for Amalric Walter’s production.

This “Myosotis” design is a testament to this collaboration between a master glassmaker and a designer trained in the decorative arts of Nancy.

Its naturalistic floral relief decoration continues the botanical tradition of Art Nouveau, while its compact proportions and understated wrought-iron frame link the object to the decorative language of the 1920s.

The pâte de verre technique used by Walter relied on finely ground colored glass powders, arranged in refractory molds. This process made it possible to achieve complex reliefs as well as precisely controlled variations in transparency and color.

Documented example: The “Myosotis” nightlight by Amalric Walter and Marcel Corrette is listed in several specialized auction catalogs, notably:

  • Ader, Paris, auction of April 6, 2023, lot 40.

  • Ader, Paris, auction of May 27, 2025, lot 134 B.

  • Prunier, December 10, 2023 auction, lot 43.

Provenance

Private Art Nouveau / Art Deco collection, Geneva, Switzerland.

Condition

The glass paste portion exhibits the surface characteristics typical of this technique, as well as slight signs of aging, visible in the detailed photographs.

The blue top cover of the incense burner appears to be a replacement added after the work was originally made.

A removable clear glass insert is included with the set, as shown in the photographs.

We invite collectors to carefully examine all of the photographs, particularly the close-ups of the signatures, the wrought-iron frame, and the removable parts.
