Late Victorian Sterling Silver Column Candlesticks Sheffield 1900 Hawksworth
Pair of matching sterling silver square-base Neoclassical column candlesticks. Each candlestick features a wide square base rising through multiple graduated, stepped tiers into a central vertical pillar. The lower stepped section of the base is decorated on all 4 sides with embossed fabric festoons or swags that are suspended from detailed ribbon bows. The perimeter edges of both the base footprint and the intermediate tiers feature uniform embossed rows of beaded borders. The central vertical column displays a straight, tapered profile embellished with vertical fluting lines that extend to a beaded shoulder band. The upper section of each column supports a vase-shaped candle socket. The exterior wall of each candle socket is decorated with matching miniature ribbon bows and draped fabric swags. The top rim of each socket terminates in a wide, fixed circular drip pan showing a concentric beaded border pattern along its outer edge. The interior cavities of the base sections contain a weighted core composition for structural stability, resulting in a total combined gross weight of 2077 grams for both units. Stamped horizontally into the lower flat edge of the square base rim is a series of four crisp British hallmarks. These marks include the manufacturer initials HE over LD inside a cartouche, a crown town mark, a lion passant purity mark, and a gothic lowercase date letter h. The physical dimensions measure 27 cm in total height and 11 cm in square width across the footprint of the base. The exterior surfaces show a polished white metallic sheen.
