Antique Jeweled Gilt Metal Covered Urn or Twin-Handled Covered Tazza

An antique gilt metal covered urn of highly decorative form, richly embellished with colourful cabochon stones, white enamel decoration and finely cast scrolling ornament.

The globular body is raised on a circular pedestal foot and fitted with a matching solid domed cover surmounted by an elegant turned finial. The body is decorated with alternating raised cartouches set with large oval and circular cabochon stones in deep ruby red, emerald green and sapphire blue tones, framed by elaborate scrolling foliate ornament. White enamel panels provide a striking contrast to the richly gilded surface, while the matching pedestal base is similarly adorned with jewel-like cabochons and decorative enamel work.

The twin openwork scrolling handles terminate in finely modelled mythical dragon or serpent heads, lending the piece a distinctive Renaissance Revival character. The removable domed cover continues the same richly ornamented decoration, with matching coloured cabochons surrounding the finial.

The upper solid domed lid is mounted on a concealed rear hinge and opens smoothly to reveal a central circular storage compartment with a plain polished interior and a precision flush-fitting rim. The quality of the hinge and flush-closing construction reflects the high standard of craftsmanship throughout.

Inspired by Renaissance Revival and Baroque decorative arts, this finely executed piece would make an impressive cabinet display, decorative centrepiece, or luxurious table ornament.

Condition

Very good antique condition with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The gilding remains bright, the enamel decoration is well preserved, the coloured cabochon stones are present, and the hinged lid operates smoothly, allowing the piece to display beautifully.
