Period: late 19th century
Origin: Naples
Material: Glazed terracotta
Dimensions:
Elegant pair of Neorenaissance vases in glazed terracotta, produced in Neapolitan workshops at the end of the 19th century.
The decorative vases feature a slender form, with an ovoid body resting on a flared foot, connected to a narrow neck and culminating in a leaf-shaped spout in relief, enhancing their decorative appeal (minor restoration to the spout, visible in the photo on the left-hand vase).
The sculptural richness is evident in the foliated volute handles and lateral mascarons, skillfully modeled and decorated in polychrome. The central body is adorned with large, finely bordered oval panels featuring four mythological and pastoral scenes, animated by luminous landscapes — trees, hills, and open skies inhabited by bucolic figures and allegories of Love — creating serene and narrative atmospheres typical of the classical tradition reinterpreted in a 19th-century style.
The entire surface is enhanced by the typical Neapolitan maiolica palette, employing intense yellows, cobalt blues, greens, violets, and touches of orange, applied over a glossy glaze. This chromatic choice not only highlights the sculptural and pictorial details of the vases but also creates a harmonious and vibrant ensemble, where decoration and color interact in perfect harmony with the Neorenaissance style of southern Italy in the late 19th century.
