Portrait of a man by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, circa 1715–1720. The influence of his master, Nicolas de Largillierre, is clearly evident in this work.
This portrait of a man posing in a three-quarter view to the right, with his face turned slightly toward the viewer, is a composition frequently found in the work of Jean-Baptiste Oudry, set against an architectural background. This unidentified man stands before a wall, with a pilaster on the right, while a large portion of the left background is occupied by a red background.
In its treatment, this portrait can be compared to a Portrait of a Man (current location unknown; Sotheby’s Monaco, June 15, 1990, lot 271) and the *Portrait of a War Auditor* (Lille, Musée des Beaux-Arts, inv. P 1986), dated 1719. The rendering of the wig and the traces of gunpowder on the shoulders are characteristic of the master.
This painting is included in the catalog raisonné of Jean-Baptiste Oudry’s works.
