Landscape And Village Painting By E. De Retz
Artist: Eudes De Retz
A superb and elegant oil painting on canvas by Eudes de RETZ (1856–1930). A landscape painter in the tradition of the Arras School (which emerged from the legacy of Corot and Dutilleux in the 19th century), he notably painted landscapes, garden views, mills, and waterways (in Charente or the Nord department). He served as an auditor for Société Générale, then as collector for the hospices and the charity office of Arras beginning in 1880. Alongside his professional duties, he was actively involved in local cultural life as a painter and as a member of the committee of the Artistic Union, the museum, and other institutions in Arras.
As for this painting, it depicts a sloping field with a river flowing in the foreground. At the top of the hill stands a cluster of houses with tiled roofs, reminiscent of Charente architecture—a region where the painter created many of his works. The painting is very luminous and in perfect condition; the canvas has been mounted on cardboard.
The painting is signed in the lower right corner and is presented in its original wooden frame with gilded stucco.
