Emilian School
First half of the 18th century
Contemporary gilded frame

The painting is likely a very pleasing sketch, executed with great skill, intended as a preparatory study for a major, large-scale work.
The composition is developed through an excellent interplay of gazes among the main figures.
The Infant Jesus, illuminated from the front at the center of the scene, stretches out his arms toward the young St. John, who is looking him in the eyes.
The Virgin, also bathed in light at the top of the canvas, lowers her most tender face toward Elizabeth, who in turn exchanges a glance with Joseph.
The arrangement of the figures is executed with great scenic skill.
The artist succeeds in making all the characters in the scene central figures within a distinctly pyramidal composition.
The group of figures, with a strong contrast between light and shadow, stands out from the barely sketched background landscape, creating an excellent three-dimensional effect.
The work is in excellent condition, complete with its original frame.
