Doltcha, Table Carafe, Tin-plated Copper, Iranian Azerbaijan, 19th Century, Collection
Artist: Art Kadjar
"Doltcha," a table carafe made of tin-plated copper, originating from Iran, specifically from Iranian Azerbaijan.
These carafes held appetizing or medicinal beverages such as iskenjebi or sherbet, drinks that are an integral part of Azerbaijani culinary tradition.
Richly decorated with fifteen vertical friezes of stylized flowers along the body.
A wide, S-shaped bronze handle secured by two hammered fasteners.
The base of the spout is delicately engraved with a lotus.
The floral motif gained widespread popularity during the Sassanid dynasty and later under the Safavid dynasty of Persia (1501–1736).
It was a major textile motif in Iran during the Qajar and Pahlavi dynasties.
At that time, these motifs were used to decorate royal insignia, crowns, and court attire, as well as textiles used by the general population.
The finesse of the engravings demonstrates the dexterity of Persian engravers.
These marvelous tin-plated copper pieces were, during the Safavid and Qajar dynasties, a prominent alternative to silver and enjoyed the same status.
These objects were undoubtedly the centerpieces of Persian homes.
A magnificent example of Persian art, our intricately crafted piece is a beautiful collector’s item.
The piece features a very fine patina throughout.
Examples are preserved in museums as part of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation collection, a cultural heritage of Azerbaijan,
