“Still Life with Plums, Apples, and a Pitcher”
Oil on original canvas-backed cardboard,
Signed lower left,
A beautiful work by the Alsatian painter Marie-Augustin Zwiller depicting a still life with fruit and a pitcher on a mantelpiece.
Like the artist Jean-Jacques Henner, Zwiller depicts fruit still lifes characterized by the simplicity of their composition and their play of light.
An orphan, Marie-Augustin Zwiller found employment at a textile printing factory, where he was tasked with creating preparatory drawings. This first job enabled him to be admitted to the Mulhouse School of Drawing, where he won several awards between 1867 and 1869. He later became a drawing teacher in Mulhouse.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in 1882 and received numerous awards.
In 1883, he moved to Paris and set up his studio in Neuilly.
In 1912, Zwiller was appointed a member of the Paris Salon, which included the most famous painters of the time.
His works are held in private collections and in various French museums, notably the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Sundgauvien in Altkirch.
