Artist: Louis Gallait ( 1810-1887 )

Louis Gallait, born on May 10, 1810, in Tournai and died on November 20, 1887, in Schaerbeek, was a renowned Belgian painter and engraver who left his artistic mark on the 19th century. After studying at the Royal Athenaeum of Tournai, he began his career as a clerk for a lawyer, while also taking classes at the Tournai Academy of Drawing under the guidance of Philippe-Auguste Hennequin.

In 1832, his painting “The Coin of Caesar” earned him the History Prize in a competition organized by the Society of Fine Arts and Literature of Ghent, marking the beginning of his artistic recognition. Gallait then developed a style of historical painting focused on the authenticity of local color and the dramatic impact of his scenes. His influence attracted many artists to Brussels, including Frédérique O’Connell.

His European reputation was cemented in 1841 with “The Abdication of Charles V,” a work commissioned by the Belgian government that was met with considerable success. This triumph earned him a host of honors, including the Legion of Honor. Declining the noble title of baron offered by King Leopold I, Gallait died in 1887 and was honored with a grand funeral in Tournai, his hometown, which commemorated his legacy with a monument in his honor.
