Louis XV Period Chest of Drawers, Curved on all Sides, opening on the front with 2 Large Drawers without Crossbar, Stamped Pierre ROUSSEL + JME, on the left Crossbar. It is in Marquetry of Violet Wood and Rosewood with Gironne Decor in the Center, and Interlacing in the Spandrels. Very Rich Ornamentation of Gilded Bronzes. Its Top is a very thick red, gray and white Pyrenees Marble, It stands on slightly curved Feet, shod with openwork Bronze Clogs. It measures 134 CM in Length, 63 CM in Depth and 88 CM in Height. ROUSSEL Pierre (1723-1782) Cabinetmaker. Mastered on August 21, 1745. A very skilled marquetry maker, Roussel left behind an abundant, diverse and excellent production. Received Master Cabinetmaker in 1745, Pierre Roussel settled on rue de Charonne, in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine under the name "L'Image de Saint Pierre". Thanks to his qualities as a cabinetmaker and especially as an outstanding marquetry maker, he very quickly acquired a great reputation. In 1762 he became a juror of his community. From 1767 he was considered one of the best cabinetmakers of his time, which is confirmed by the "Almanach d'indication générale ou du Vray mérite" of 1769 which cites him as one of the first cabinetmakers in Paris. Greatly appreciated by his colleagues, he became deputy of the cabinetmakers' body in 1777 then syndic two years later. His abundant and varied productions adapted to all the styles of the 18th century, with elegance and refinement. Many Louis XV commodes, veneered in rosewood or violet wood, are decorated with marquetry of flowers or ribbon bows. Lacquer and tasteful landscapes from the Far East are also often used in his decoration. On the Transition and Louis XVI furniture, we find many marquetry works of architectural landscapes of cities, rivers or ports, without of course forgetting the marquetry with geometric designs often used. The inventory of his goods, carried out after his death, proves the prosperity of his establishment that his wife, associated with his sons, took over management.
