Chest Of Drawers Stamped J.f. Dubut , 18th Century

Artist: Jean François Dubut

Important Transition period chest of drawers, stamped by Jean-François Dubut, in satinwood veneer arranged in leaves and framed with Greek fillets, opening with three drawers on the waist and four leaves on the front.
The cabinet features an elegant front with a slight central projection, characteristic of Parisian production in the 1760s-1770s, already heralding neoclassical taste while retaining the suppleness of Louis XV lines.

.

It rests on cambered legs finished with rich chased and gilded bronze sabots.
The uprights are adorned with finely worked ormolu falls and ornaments; the keyholes, pull rings and central apron contribute to the excellent ornamental quality of the whole.

The geometric decor of Greek fillet underlines the warm amber tone of the satin-finish veneer panels.

The top is topped with veined white marble molded to follow the contours of the piece.

The interior opens onto ample storage space and retains a fine quality of cabinetwork with oak fading.

Parisian work of the Transition period, circa 1765-1770.
Stamped "J.F. DUBUT" and with the "JME" Jurande hallmark on the front upright.

Parisian period, circa 1765-1770.

Jean-François Dubut is among the most sought-after cabinetmakers of the Transition period.
His works, renowned for the finesse of their veneers and the quality of their bronzes, are today held in several major public collections, including the Louvre, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Musée Nissim de Camondo.

Very good state of preservation with usual restorations and traditional varnish maintenance.

Beautiful decorative presence for this sober, elegant and architectural commode, representative of the refined taste of the end of the reign of Louis XV.

DUBUT Jean-François (?-1778) - cabinetmaker - date of mastery unknown : A talented cabinetmaker, Jean-François Dubut produced mostly Louis XV and Transitional furniture of remarkable quality.

While we don't know when the cabinetmaker received his master's degree, or even if he ever did, we do know that he produced works of the highest quality for both French and foreign clients. His fancy furniture includes a large chest of drawers in black and gold lacquer in the Chinese style, a small violin-shaped secretary with black, gold and red lacquer panels, and a small Transition secretary. In addition to lacquers and varnishes with Far Eastern decorations, the cabinetmaker also uses leaf veneers and trophy or flower marquetry.
They can be found on classic furniture, from commode to secretary.
He also left behind several Transition and Louis XVI models veneered in mahogany or satin. He is also known as a specialist in ladies' secretaries.
After his death, a public sale was organized to certify the extent of his work.
The sale catalog then attests to: "bookcases, plain and cylinder cabinet secretaires, duchesse tables, vide-poches, oval and round, stepped and cylinder tables, tables known as mignonnettes, night tables, desks, encoignures, commodes, chiffonnières, toilets, screens, screens, all in Indian wood."
