This oil on wood panel painting is a work by Ildephonse Stocquart (1819-1889). It depicts a peaceful scene of horses and cows in a meadow, in a classical style typical of the mid-19th century. Countryside scenes, very fashionable during the reigns of Louis Philippe and Napoleon III, brought a touch of greenery into elegant city drawing rooms. This painting is in excellent condition; a cleaning would be beneficial to restore its full brightness. The giltwood frame (40 x 28 cm) has lost a small corner piece but retains its gilding.
