Native American Necklace Made Of Black Bear Claws
Necklace composed of 22 black bear claws, approximately 40 to 45 mm in length, strung in a circle on leather straps. It is adorned with spherical copper alloy beads and cylindrical blue, white, and red beads. The claws retain their natural bases. An authentic, distinctive piece from the Bernard Souteyrand collection.
Necklaces made of black bear claws are rare. A comparable piece is housed at the Royal Ontario Museum: the necklace from the Chiefswood Collection, which belonged to E. Pauline Johnson, a member of the Haudenosaunee community of the Six Nations. Dated to the late 19th or early 20th century, it is cataloged as consisting of grizzly and black bear claws mounted with fur. Its straps offer an interesting comparison to those of our necklace.
