18th-century Grand Tour Roman Frame In Gilded Bronze And Semi-precious Stones

Roman frame in ebonized wood with gilded and engraved bronze inlays, embellished with four cabochons of semi-precious stones, late 18th century.
Since the late 16th century, Rome and Florence have vied for supremacy in the art of semi-precious stone craftsmanship: it was during the Baroque era that the idea of a precious frame—made of ebony or ebonized wood—in the so-called “box” shape emerged, embellished with semi-precious stones and gilded bronze, generally applied in leaf motifs, or even in the form of cherubs, which adorned the frame’s inner edge, marked the space near the corners, and created movement with sinuous lines along the outer edges. It was, therefore, a type of object that involved cabinetmakers, stone carvers, and bronze casters working together.
More than a century later, that same model was revived and reintroduced to the wealthy travelers and refined collectors of the Grand Tour, who traveled throughout Italy at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
