With great decorative impact, the painting depicts a graceful young woman standing, with short, black hair in the Oriental style, dressed in a blue silk kimono, holding a large fan behind her head. The painting captivates with its colors: the orange-toned background against which the figure of the young model stands out in her beautiful blue kimono with floral motifs; the bright red of the cuffs that complements the young woman’s lipstick; her mischievous black bob crowned by the large fan.

In the 19th century, Japonism had a significant influence on French art, particularly in painting, the decorative arts, and literature. This movement, born of a fascination with Japanese culture and art following Japan’s opening to foreign trade, had a profound impact on Western artistic creation in the second half of the century. Portrait painting in the second half of the century was often so captivated by the East that models were dressed in the Eastern style. The most famous painting remains Claude Monet’s *La Japonaise* from 1876, in which the painter depicts his wife wearing a red kimono in a theatrical pose.

The painting is monogrammed in the lower right corner, but the monogram is difficult to read.
