Black Forest Box With Two Playing Cats

Carved wooden box, in the "Black Forest" style, 19th century.
Beautiful high-relief carving depicting two cats playing around a barrel.
A cat lying on top of the box serves as a handle; next to it is a root vegetable (a carrot or a turnip?).
Below, lying on a plank, the other cat appears to be lying in wait for an imminent confrontation—a charming and very realistic theme.
Oval base decorated with wood and a haystack motif.
The lid has a bit of play but still fits very well; an original cradle-shaped opening allows the handle of a spoon to pass through.
The entire piece is crafted from dark brown-stained linden wood.
Beautiful patina; no chips or missing pieces; no restoration.
Note: Models featuring animals—especially cats—are more sought after.
