Woodblock print, print, ukiyo-e of the kabuki actor Iwai Kumesaburō. The figure is dressed in a blue kimono adorned with chrysanthemums under a traditional black coat, his head draped in a black hood (zukin). He holds a paper lantern in one hand and a pipe case in the other.

Utagawa Toyokuni III (1786–1865): also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was one of the most popular ukiyo-e painters of the 19th century, as well as one of the most prolific and financially successful, surpassing Kuniyoshi and Hiroshige. He notably created an illustration of the *Genji Monogatari* and depictions of contemporary kabuki actors. He is an undisputed master of woodblock printing.
