Paul Borel (1828-1923),French painter and engraver. Born in Lyon, the orphan of wealthy merchants, he entered with his brother at the Collège d'Oullins, founded in 1833 by the Dominican fathers to promote literary and artistic vocations. After his brother's death in 1848, Paul Borel moved to Paris, where he met up with his friend Louis Janmot. He studied the classics at the Louvre. He made his debut at the Salon de Lyon in 1851 with religious works. In 1852, Janmot and Borel went on a Grand Tour of Italy to seek new sources of inspiration. In 1857, he exhibited at the Salon de Paris Salon. Between 1857 and 1864, he received occasional tuition from Hippolyte Flandrin, professor at the École Beaux-Arts in Paris. During this period, he painted the portrait of his wife, who died two years after their wedding. Following this Borel commissioned Pierre Bossan to build the chapel for the Oullins school. A family inheritance in 1860 enabled Paul Borel to fulfillment. He began decorating the chapel at Saint-Thomas-d'Aquin in Oullins, which took him over twenty years to complete. Paul Borel is also engraver. He produced numerous etchings, the majority of which depict the trees that are omnipresent in his landscapes.
