Venetian Box With Oriental Decor In The "embriachi" Style, Made Of Wood With Bone Inlay, 19th Century
A Venetian box made of stained and blackened wood, featuring light-wood marquetry and bone inlays using the technique known as “alla certosina.” Rectangular in shape, the box features a rich geometric decoration on all sides and the lid, consisting of interlacing patterns, rosettes, stars, and polychrome friezes inspired by Oriental motifs. The stepped lid is accented with alternating bands of bone and dark wood and arranged around a central panel decorated with geometric marquetry. The front, featuring a lock and a movable ring, is adorned with a remarkable central panel of stylized interlacing patterns evoking pseudo-calligraphic Oriental motifs. The interior is made of blackened wood; the underside of the lid is lined with embossed gold paper featuring a repetitive floral pattern.
A particularly decorative historicist Venetian piece, part of the 19th-century revival of Italian “alla certosina” boxes inspired by medieval and Renaissance works associated with the Embriachi workshop.
