Ebe, Large Neoclassical Marble Sculpture After Berthel Thorvaldsen, 19th Century

Carrara marble sculpture depicting Hebe, based on the original by Berthel Thorvaldsen. Roman workshop, 19th century.
The original, now in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, was created in Rome in 1806 and is the first of two versions on the same theme; the other dates from 1816, and the two differ only in the type of garment worn. Its noble simplicity—rigorous and austere—was warmly welcomed by 19th-century purists, for whom it represented the most faithful and uncorrupted adherence to the models of ancient Greek sculpture.
Its composed beauty ensured its success and sparked the production of workshop copies, which were in high demand among wealthy collectors and art lovers.
Ours is a fine example of a Roman workshop piece produced around 1860.
Excellent condition.
