Ernest Jean Joseph GODFRINON (Ixelles, 1878 – Schaerbeek, 1927) was a Belgian painter born in Ixelles in 1878. He attended the academies in Brussels and Ixelles. He was a member of the group “Le Sillon,” a Belgian artistic association founded in 1893 by a group of Academy students from the ashes of the Voorwarts collective as a counterweight to Symbolism. The desire for a return to traditional painting and the rich Flemish realist tradition drove the group’s members toward a naturalist style. The dark, dense colors of his early work gradually lightened over time, giving rise to an increasingly luminous and vibrant palette, accompanied by a keen sensitivity to composition. A sensitive and refined artist, elegant in his chromatic harmonies, Godfrinon succeeds in combining an intimate sensibility with sophistication in his works. His artistic output, which includes landscapes, still lifes, interiors, and genre scenes, draws close to Impressionist approaches.
