SNOWY LANDSCAPE

This charming watercolor byby Adolphe Rey perfectly illustrates the artist’s attachment to the landscapes of Auvergne and to the aesthetic developed by the painters of the Murol School in the early 20th century. Signed in the lower right corner, the work reflects this constant pursuit of atmospheric effects that made this major regional movement in French painting famous.
At the center of the composition, a conifer bending under the weight of the snow structures the space and immediately captures the viewer’s attention. Around it, the forms blend into a delicate winter light where the whites are tinged with subtle blues, greens, and purples. Adolphe Rey does not seek a meticulous description but rather the rendering of an impression, a fleeting atmospheric sensation, in a thoroughly Post-Impressionist spirit.
The artist’s masterful use of watercolor allows him to preserve the landscape’s full freshness. The areas of white paper become light, while the colorful brushstrokes enliven the shadows and lend depth and vibrancy to the snow. This freedom of execution, combined with a careful observation of nature, is one of the most sought-after characteristics of the artists of the Murol School. Through its subject matter, luminous palette, and serene atmosphere, this work is fully in keeping with the tradition of winter landscapes that established Adolphe Rey’s reputation.
It reveals a sensitive artist, capable of conveying the beauty of Auvergne winters with simplicity and poetry.

ADOLPHE REY (1863–1944)
Long remaining in the shadows due as much to his temperament as to his modesty, Adolphe Rey devoted his entire life to painting, far from social circles and major exhibitions. It was not until the 1930s that he agreed to exhibit a few works at the Salon of the Lyon Society of Fine Arts, where several of his landscapes attracted attention.
Born on April 8, 1863, in Châteauvillain, in the Isère department, Adolphe Rey first studied architecture in Paris before embarking on a military career in Lyon in 1884. An infantry officer, he was promoted to captain in 1904. Weakened by a lung condition, he subsequently returned to Bourgoin-Jallieu, where he passed away on August 26, 1944.
His encounter with Victor Charreton, his childhood friend and future leading painter of the Murol School, would prove decisive.Charreton invited him to come paint in Murol between 1915 and 1918, amidst the volcanic and snow-covered landscapes of Auvergne that would profoundly inspire his work.
A painter of light and the seasons, Adolphe Rey created powerful and vibrant oil paintings, celebrating the landscapes of the Dauphiné and the snows of Auvergne with a generous and luminous touch. But
he excelled above all in the art of watercolor, becoming a remarkable exponent of the medium, working with great technical mastery both en plein air and in the studio.
Institutional recognition of his work came late, but it was significant:In 2008, the Musée des Peintres de l’École de Murol(s) dedicated a major retrospective to him titled “À la découverte d’Adolphe Rey” (Discovering Adolphe Rey), organized by Philippe Auserve. This major exhibition revealed to the public the scope and quality of his work, more than sixty years after his death.
Adolphe Rey’s works captivate with their sincerity, luminous sensitivity, and profound poetry, making this unassuming artist
a unique and endearing figure of the Murol School.
