B. Magenthié Orientalist Watercolor, Pointe Des Oudayas, Bouregreg, 1926, Morocco, Rabat, Maghr
Artist: B. Magenthié
This beautiful watercolor from the 1920s depicts the "Pointe des Oudaïas" and the crossing of the Bouregreg River; it is dated 1926 and signed B. Magenthié. Although the artist is unknown, the quality of the drawing and the watercolor technique reveal great artistic mastery in the rendering of the landscape. The scene features figures rowing across the river in a small boat, with the city of Rabat in the background. In addition to the figures and the city on the heights, the projecting quays help establish a sense of depth. This work is representative of the many artists who traveled to North Africa to depict Mediterranean landscapes and life—a kind of "second Orientalism" that emerged alongside the colonial dynamics of the interwar period. Dimensions: 48 cm x 29 cm (excluding mat and frame); 71 cm x 52 cm (including frame). The artwork is in good condition, despite some foxing.
