Pair of bronze candlesticks, stamped by Alfred Daubrée, model known as "Maenads," 19th century.
Made of silver-plated and gilded bronze, with refined chiseling, they bear the AD mark for Alfred Daubrée on the base. They depict two Maenads—the mythological followers of Dionysus—engaged in a frenzied dance, one holding a tambourine and the other a thyrsus.
Alfred Daubrée (1817–1885) was a French sculptor, foundryman, goldsmith, and bronze castor originally from Nancy. He began his career as the owner of a jewelry shop in Nancy and was actively involved in the local art scene; in particular, he served as treasurer of the *Société lorraine des amis des arts de Nancy* from 1851 to 1881.
In the 1850s, he settled in Paris, at 85 rue Montmartre, as a dealer in art bronzes and jewelry. He collaborated with renowned artists such as Fratin and Cumberworth, creating a multitude of refined bronze objects that showcased his exceptional craftsmanship and artistic vision. His works quickly gained recognition for their impeccable craftsmanship and aesthetic beauty, earning him the esteem and appreciation of both his colleagues and his clients. Daubrée reached the pinnacle of his career in 1867, when he received an award at the prestigious Paris World’s Fair. This recognition attested to his artistic talent and cemented his reputation as a master of his craft.
