Antique Painting Jacob Asks Laban For Rachel's Hand XVII Century
Oil on canvas mounted on hardboard. 17th-century Italian school.
The painting depicts an episode from the biblical book of Genesis, in which Jacob, while tending his uncle Laban’s flock, falls in love with his daughter Rachel and asks her father for her hand in marriage, but is then deceived and forced to marry her older sister Leah first.
In the scene, Jacob is seen standing before Laban, who, seated on his throne, holds back his young and beautiful daughter Rachel, pointing with a raised finger at his other daughter, Leah, who slumps in the corner, distraught; all around, the women and maids of the household watch, their emotions reflecting the events unfolding.
The scene takes place in front of a classical-style house, while in the background to the left an Italian landscape unfolds, featuring mountain peaks and a lake amid lush greenery; on the path leading to the house, a wagon is approaching, preceded by a flock of sheep and goats.
The canvas was restored in the past and mounted on a hardboard panel.
It is presented in a late 19th-century frame.
