Chair From Capo With Two Ancestral Figures, Democratic Republic Of The Congo
A true sculptural masterpiece, this chieftain’s seat epitomizes the extraordinary skill achieved over the centuries by the sculptors of the Luba ethnic group of eastern Congo. The two ancestors, whose figures are nearly mirror images of each other yet sexually differentiated, support the circular seat on their fingertips with a graceful gesture. Their faces are solemn and pensive, with eyes half-closed in wide sockets and a faint smile that conveys a composed serenity. Their hair is combed back, and their smooth-surfaced bodies bear the scarifications characteristic of the ethnic group. It has a fine patina of age. As a whole, the sculpture conveys a great sense of balance and harmony.
